FABRIC CLADDINGS

PVDF

PVDF (polyvinylidene difluoride) coated fabric membranes represent the baseline industry standard for structural fabric construction. Commonly coated with a protective acrylic or PVDF top coat, this extremely versatile material is fully color printable, carries an expected design life from 10 to 25 years, and is available with inherent light transmission levels ranging from high translucency to total opacity.  PVDF membranes offer substantial cost savings versus traditional construction materials.  In its natural brilliant white state, this flexible structural fabric significantly reduces net radiant heat retention, making it ideal where cooler interior temperatures are desired.

Due to its thermoplastic nature, PVDF, may be heated to a semi-solid state for UV light inhibitor and anti-soiling fungicide infusion.  Multiple sheets of this amazing fabric can be overlain and permanently bonded together during fabrication through the use of weldable seam technology.  When subsequently cooled to room temperature, a continuous membrane with seams stronger than the fabric itself will have been created.

Big Span’s PVDF fabric is a fully recyclable, zero-waste industrial product.  All remnants and miscellaneous cuttings resulting from the normal manufacturing or fabrication process can be melted back down for reproduction.

PTFE

A PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) membrane consists of a woven fiberglass fabric, coated with Teflon, making it Class “A” 100% non-combustible (as certified by ASTM), extremely durable, and weather resistant with self-cleaning properties far superior to those of most other structural materials.  The chemically-inert PTFE fiberglass membranes can tolerate climatic conditions ranging well outside the most extreme environments on earth (-100°F to +450°F or -73°C to +232°C), with expected design lifespans in excess of 30 years.  Its low-surface free energy easily allows for complete cleaning by rainwater alone, provides total immunity to degradation by UV radiation, and has earned PTFE fabric Energy Star and Cool Roof Rating Council certifications. Extensive solar property testing revealed that PTFE fiberglass membranes can carry as much as 73% solar reflectivity, with just 7% exterior surface energy retention.  Specific classes of PTFE fiberglass have been shown to exhibit 14% solar energy absorption, while still permitting 13% natural light and 7% of re-radiated solar heat transmission.  PTFE fabrics typically begin their lives as an off-white or beige color, but will quickly become a brilliant stark white with tension and exposure to sunlight; and will retain their self-cleaning properties much longer than other materials used in the industry.  As such, molds, mildews, fungi, and bacteria will have a much harder time breeding on PTFE surfaces as compared to fabrics of lesser quality.

ETFE

ETFE (Ethylene Tetrafluoroethylene) film is extremely durable, totally transparent, fully color printable, and considerably lighter in weight than glass structures.  ETFE is rapidly establishing itself as the overall best value option for skylight applications, large-scale natural light green housing, transparent long-span structures, and architectural building facades.  ETFE is unchallenged among building materials in terms of aesthetic impact and visual presence whenever a structure simply must stand out as a unique statement of functional art.  With design flexibility that far exceeds that of other structural fabrics, ETFE can also be paired with colored lighting, providing the ability to produce a completely different look and feel at the touch of a button.  Whether your intent is to add a statement piece to permanently differentiate your corporate headquarters from your competitors’ or to cap off an already impressive design with your personal architectural signature, Big Span’s EFTE structural film is the absolute best medium for bringing the boundless potential of your own creativity to life.
